DIY starts with a small test
For light surface dirt on sound paving, a brush and a compatible mild cleaner may be enough. Check the paving manufacturer’s advice and try an inconspicuous area first. Marshalls describes a soap-and-brush method for sandstone; pressure is not the only way to clean a patio.
Judge the test when the surface is dry. Wet stone can look darker and temporarily hide marks. If the result is acceptable, you have a basis for deciding whether to continue yourself.
Get an assessment when the surface is uncertain
Ask for specialist advice if blocks move, mortar crumbles, you cannot identify the material or an old coating is peeling. More pressure is not a solution to every stain. A competent quote should explain the proposed method and what it will not repair.
Permeable paving needs its specified jointing material. Resin, tarmac and natural stone should not inherit a generic block-paving cleaning recipe. Check the actual product or installer instructions.
Count the whole DIY job
Include collection and return of hired equipment, preparation, cleaning, tidying and any joint work. Check whether accessories, delivery, cleaning products and protective equipment are extra. We have not verified a local hire tariff, so there is no invented DIY saving in this comparison.
Also check whether you can use the equipment safely and manage the water. Keep others away from the work area and follow equipment and product instructions. Stop if you see surface damage or failing joints.

Try DIY if the paving is sound, the manufacturer permits your method and you are comfortable with the full clean-up. Seek a written professional assessment for damage, unfamiliar materials, difficult access or extensive staining.
